The Danish landscape offers an abundance of exciting and beautiful nature experiences. Wherever you chose to go for a holiday in Denmark you are never far away from outstanding experiences in the wood, by the sea or in the open landscape.
Through the local tourist agency you will be introduced to a lot of offers which make Denmark an interesting place to visit for a nature holiday. Especially during summer there is ample opportunity to examine the many variations of nature together with a nature guide or to study the fascinating variety of animal life together with a biologist. You can hike or go by bike, visit private gardens and go for a swim in the sea or lake. You yourself can chose your own experiences - the vigorous Danish nature offers you lots of them.
When you walk in the nature it is obviously important to respect animal life, their habitats and brood. Please remember to lead your dog on a string, be careful if you smoke or use open fire of any kind, and please leave the plants, bushes and trees in their natural place. If you want to go on flower "hunt", please remember to do it only in the public forests. Here you are allowed to gather berries, mushrooms and flowers for your own use, but of course you have to keep away from the protected species!
Hiking: get close to nature
Hiking is a fabulous way to get in touch with nature. You decide your own pace and are able to register all the visual impressions, sounds and smells surrounding you. Denmark has a solid tradition for hiking and is consequently provided with marked paths. Hiking on marked paths makes you feel safe and will often lead you to places that you would not have discovered yourself. If you chose to follow other paths you must be prepared to find yourself at the end of a blind path or to end up in a private area. Furthermore most of the marked paths pass through some of the most beautiful nature areas. If you dress taking the season and weather into account most of the paths will be accessible all the year round. However, you have to consider that some of the paths might be covered with water.
Nature guiding: if you want to know more
Nature guiding is another way of getting in touch with nature. Together with a guide you can go out and experience nature at close range. You will be informed about the surroundings, the culture history, the landscape, and the environmental situation. The nature guides are attached to the nature centres and schools, the museums and the open-air organisations. The guides have a huge professional knowledge and are daily visitors to the local nature areas. Everybody can participate in all the excursions and activities. Many of the excursions are arranged in a way permitting you to share your nature experiences with your children. It is a fact that everybody involved is very eager to illustrate the correlation between man and nature. Information folders on arrangements can be procured from the local tourist agency or the library. The arrangements will also be published or mentioned in the local paper. Most of the excursions and arrangements are free of charge; only in a few cases an entrance fee has to be paid, and in that case a very reasonable one.
Birds and the other animals of the forest.
Denmark has got a rich animal life. Especially the bird lovers have the possibility of many fine experiences. You can meet the birds everywhere. Most of the local areas have some special bird habitats where you can watch various birds. Also in the city or in the gardens of a certain dimension you can get many kind of experiences if you are able to use your eyes. If you would like to find some good bird habitats you can use the local library or the internet. When you are looking for the birds you have to be careful when you are close to the birds. Especially during breeding time you must avoid the areas with many nests. You can contact the local birds association to have one of their members as guide for your bird excursion. It is also a fine idea to bring your binoculars so that you can observe the birds without disturbing them. The binoculars also offer the opportunity to follow other kind of animal life, so - be aware of what is going on in the forest floor and along the fields.
Open gardens: exotic experiences
If you want to experience flowers and plants of a more exotic kind you just have to visit some of the open Danish gardens. Through the Danish Garden Society you can visit more than 470 private and public gardens. To go for a garden walk is an exciting alternative to the nature walk as the well kept gardens have flowers and plants that are not present in the free Danish nature. The open gardens often reveal an untraditional garden design with new exciting ideas of how to use the Danish plants. Often you will have a chat with the owner of the garden thus getting ideas and tips for your own garden beds. Visiting the gardens is often free of charge, and the garden walk is a lovely way to experience luxuriant flowers and interesting trees.
