The Danish people has close relations to the water surrounding us. We spend a great part of our leisure time in and on the water. Consequently it is only natural that a vacation in Denmark contains the blue element. The possibilities are many. You can go diving, sailing, surfing and last, but not least, you can go for a swim - in water considered among the most clean waters of Europe. No matter if you prefer exciting adventures such as kite surfing or you prefer harmonious nature experiences by canoe along the streams and bays, Denmark is a pure water paradise offering almost everything.
Denmark has a lot of beautiful beaches. The coastline of approx. 7,500 km offers a lot a wonderful white beaches and cosy sand hollows. It is in Jutland that you find the longest and most amazing beach areas, especially on the west coast: long, white, sandy beaches. If you want some areas safe for children, the coast and bays of the eastern coast will be the best choice. Here you find a more gentle sea, consequently safer for children. Such beaches you will find, for instance, at Limfjorden, at the eastern coast of Jutland, in north and west Sealand, at the southern coast of Lolland and the eastern coast of Falster.
Bornholm has got both sandy beaches with low water for children and some more challenging ones with rocky slopes. The capital of Copenhagen is well equipped with beaches and fine possibilities to go for a swim. North of Copenhagen you find the Charlottenlund Strandbad and the Bellevue Beach which are considered the most prominent seaside resorts of Denmark. Only 10 km south of the city you find the big recreational areas of Køge Bugt Strandpark with a long sandy beach of 7 km. Furthermore during the last years Copenhagen has got some new and trendy bathing establishments in connection with the harbours and canals of the city. Click

To go for a swim: safety
No matter if you go for a swim in the sea or in the stream, you must be aware of the general bathing safety. The Council for bathing safety has published the following rules to be followed:
Do not ever go for a swim alone
Do not go for a swim right after having made an effort of some kind (such as running etc.) - permit yourself to calm down
Wait about half an hour to go for a swim after having had lunch
Always go for a swim in a direction that parallels the beach
Do not ever go for a swim in marshes and marlpits
Do not ever stay in the water for too long time - get out before you get cold
Do not ever cry for help just for fun
If possible, go for your swim near to a life-saving station or similar
Do not ever let children in the water out of your sight
Do not go further into the water when the water level is at your waist
Wherever you go swimming, check that you can touch the bottom of the sea
Leave your air bed on the beach
Do not ever swim into the deep water in order to go and fetch beach toys, balls or similar
Do not dig any holes in the dunes or slopes, and do not enter any kind of caves, made by man or nature. Each year accidents are caused by masses of fallen earth
Active water life: Windsurfing & kitesurfing
Denmark has ideal geographic and climatic conditions as far as windsurfing is concerned. The long coasts and the good Danish wind makes Denmark a perfect place for going surfing. The skilled surfer can be challenged, for instance at Klitmøller, while the beginner can try on his own or chose to attend a course run by one of the 15 surfing schools. You can chose between an introduction course of three hours or a more basic one of three days.

With those who want further challenges and excitement, the new and extreme sport called kitesurfing is becoming more and more popular. When you go kitesurfing, you stand on a board that looks like a snowboard, and it is driven by a big kite which is steered by two wires. This sport is not always quite safe so we advise you to follow a kite seminar which normally lasts for two days. Whether you are a kitesurfer or a windsurfer you have to take certain precautions. As a surfer you must give way to sail boats and keep a considerable distance to the people swimming/present in the sea. Surfers must keep a certain distance from one another. And if you go surfing in areas with nature protection, you must follow the current regulation.
Active water life: Canoe and kayak
One of the most harmonious ways of getting in touch with the Danish nature is to go paddling on the water in a canoe or a kayak. To go by canoe on the streams and lakes is a very popular occupation. We recommend you to book well in advance if you want to rent a canoe for your family. In order to respect nature, the navigation is regulated, and the capacity is consequently limited. Normally safety jacket, double paddles and maps are included in the hire.
The most popular places to go by canoe are the following: Suså on Sealand and Gudenå in Jutland followed by Skjern Å, Karup Å and Nørreå.
In a kayak you can go into the bays and the waters near to the coast. The kayak balances on the edge of the water gliding over the water with incredible elegance. In Denmark you can chose to glide quietly through an idyllic river valley or to go sailing in the breakers at the coasts. You should not go out paddling alone, and it is important to take the weather into consideration.
Renting a kayak/going by kayak is reserved for persons having experience with kayaks.
Active water life: Diving
Denmark does not only offer many experiences on the water surface. Our seas offer an exciting world worth being explored. In the Danish seas you can go wreck diving, night diving, beach diving and even archaeological diving. You can go swimming together with fry, and the bottom of the sea offers a lot of interesting wrecks. In most cases you do not need a special licence to go diving near to the wrecks. But of course you are not allowed to remove anything from the wrecks you might visit, and you have to respect the regulations and directions for diving in Denmark.
DanCenter wishes you some fine experiences - wet or dry - in the Danish nature.
