Denmark has got a coast line of 7,300 km and so many lakes and streams that it is useless to count them. Wherever you are you always have lots of opportunities to go for a trip with your fishing rod trying to make the fishes swallow the bite. There are innumerable Put and Take lakes and even the possibility of experiencing inshore fishing. Denmark offers many experiences to the amateur as well as to the skilled angler.
For a lot of people it is one of the most wonderful experiences to stand by the lake or river side with a fishing rod. Since 1996 the Administration of Nature and Forests has seen to that a number of lakes and streams are at the disposal of all the anglers; this in order to give both Danish and foreign anglers a better opportunity to go fishing. Almost all the state forest districts offer some lakes and streams where you can go fishing from the shore/bank without paying /licence.
However, often the right to go fishing in lakes and streams is private, and if you wish to go fishing in this kind of places you must buy a special fishing licence for the specific stream or lake besides the prescribed general fishing licence. A card for one day costs from DKK 40 - 150, and a card covering a week from approx. DKK 100 - 350.
Remember your fishing licence!
All persons between 18 and 67 years must have a valid fishing licence in order to be permitted to fish in the Danish lakes, streams and seas. Children under 18 years, and persons being more than 67 years do not need a fishing licence. The licence gives the authorisation to go fishing with a fishing rod or a line - not with a net nor with a trap or any other fixed tool. Often you will have the possibility of buying the licence in the fishing tackle shops of a certain size.
You must have bought the licence before starting to fish, and the licence must be valid during the period in which you go fishing. Please remember to bring both documentation and fishing licence on your fishing trips. The licence is valid for one year, and the price is DKK 100. If you prefer so, you can buy a licence for only one day at DKK 25 or for one week at DKK 75. The Fishing Control makes spot tests, and in case your licence is not ok, you will get a fine. The money coming from the sale of licences is used for the care of the fishes in general.
Remember the basic rules
As an angler it is important to respect the rules valid for angling in the specific water chosen by you. In general it is a good idea to respect the following rules:
It is not allowed to make use of pre-feeding or of fishing tools made of lead, and you must respect spawning grounds and breeding birds
In fresh water you are only allowed to use the typical angling methods and tools for fly fishing, spin and jig fishing using 1 or 2 rods per angler
In order to avoid infections you must not use bait-fishes or fish eggs coming from other fishing waters
Angling from boats or similar is normally not allowed, but in any case a licence from the local state forest district is required
The nature must be respected why attrition of the river sides must be avoided, and it is not allowed to leave fishing lines and other waste behind
Put & take
If you want to improve your chances of catching fish, and you would like to be close to fine facilities you must consider to go to a Put and Take. All over the country there are Put and Take lakes where the chance to get some fish has been facilitated by the letting out of a certain number of fish. Some anglers are looking at Put and Take as second range fishing. This is not a reasonable way to look upon it as it is a most popular sport within angling.
Most of the places are equipped in a way that makes the fishing trip more than comfortable. The range of facilities varies much, but in general you will find: Cleaning table, cleaning room with heating, fridges, toilets and tables and benches where the family can sit down and enjoy its home made sandwiches. Another advantage of going to a Put and Take lake is the fact that you often make contact with the other anglers at the lake. The price for a visit to a Put and Take lake is from DKK 50 to 125 for a certain number of hours.
Inshore Fishing
When you go inshore fishing a special licence is not required, but of course you have to pay for the general fishing licence. In any case you have to respect the local fishing prohibition and the preservation regulation. At the west coast of Jutland there are many places where there is a fishing prohibition concerning fishing from breakwaters and piers because of security reasons. In some locations you have the possibility of going on sea-fishing from a fishing vessel - but get further information from the nearest tourist agency.
Fishing and maritime museum
If you are interested in fishing and would like to know more about traditions and praxis within the angling and the fishing trade the fishing and maritime museum of Esbjerg is definitely worth a visit. The museum has an exposition area of about 14,000 m2 which offers a series of stationary and changing expositions concerning fishing and navigation. Furthermore the museum offers a salt-water aquarium and a "sealarium".
The museum is placed in beautiful surroundings near forest and beach - a fine opportunity for the family to go for a picnic before or after a visit to the museum The fishing and maritime museum is open all the year round, and you have to consider a price of DKK 70 per adult and 35 per child.
